چکیده

The accurate monitoring of the structural changes in the brain plays a central role in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), for instance for diagnostic purposes and for the assessment of the drugs e cacy in clinical trials. We propose here a framework based on the ux analysis of vector elds [13] for the automatic quanti cation of the longitudinal regional atrophy in the brain. In particular, we present here the LCC-Demons algorithm for the symmetric and robust di eomorphic registration, which is used to quantify the longitudinal changes of a given subject by registration of follow-up images. The ux of the associated deformation across the boundaries of consistently de ned group-wise regions provides the rate of longitudinal volume change. The proposed method was tested for the quanti cation of the longitudinal hippocampal and ventricular volume changes at one and two years from baseline from a group of AD and healthy ADNI subjects. The resulting measures led to statistically powered results, and to consistent longitudinal measures in terms of symmetry, transitivity and linearity.

Regional Flux Analysis of Longitudinal Atrophy in Alzheimer's Disease

The longitudinal analysis of the brain morphology in Alzheimer's disease(AD) is fundamental for understanding and quantifying the dynamics of the pathology. This study provides a new measure of the brain longitudinal changes based on the Helmholtz decomposition of deformation fields. We used the scalar pressure map associated to the irrotational component in order to identify a consistent group...

Sparse Scale-Space Decomposition of Volume Changes in Deformations Fields

Anatomical changes like brain atrophy or growth are usually not homogeneous in space and across spatial scales, since they map differently depending on the anatomical structures. Thus, the accurate analysis of volume changes from medical images requires to reliably localize and distinguish the spatial changes occurring at different scales, from voxel to regional level. We propose here a framewo...

Relating Longitudinal and Cross-Sectional Analyses of Atrophy in Alzheimer's: BSI, SIENA and SIENAX

Brain volume loss measured with structural MRI is accepted as a pathology marker, e.g., for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Atrophy can be measured with a variety of methods, some of which are longitudinal (measuring atrophy rate, for example, % brain volume change (PBVC), using two or more temporally-separated scans) and others being cross-sectional (measuring atrophy state, for example, brain volum...

Global gray matter changes in posterior cortical atrophy: A serial imaging study

BACKGROUND Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative condition predominantly associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Cross-sectional imaging studies have shown different atrophy patterns in PCA patients compared with typical amnestic Alzheimer's disease (tAD) patients, with greatest atrophy commonly found in posterior regions in the PCA group, whereas in the tAD group,...

Incident subcortical infarcts induce focal thinning in connected cortical regions.

OBJECTIVE Brain atrophy is common in subcortical ischemic vascular disease, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We set out to examine the effects of incident subcortical infarcts on cortical morphology. METHODS A total of 276 subjects with cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy, an inherited small vessel disease, were enroll...
